Microplastics in soils: an environmental geotechnics perspective
نویسندگان
چکیده
Microplastics (MPs) are emerging persistent contaminants in the terrestrial subsurface, and evidence has emerged for significant effects of MPs on biological ecosystem functions soils. Main MP sources include land spreading sewage sludge biowaste composts, plastic mulching film used horticultural fields, waste water irrigation leachate from landfills, among others. This updated state-of-the-art review paper describes recent experimental numerical research developments understanding accumulation fate soil environment (focusing their storage, degradation, transportation, leaching to groundwater etc.), followed by mitigation bioremediation measures, including MP-eating bacteria fungi best management practices reducing pollution soil. Other areas covered combined various other environmental (heavy metals, organic pollutants antibiotics) ecosystems standardisation methods detection, quantification characterisation soils, which is critical research. The concludes identifying knowledge gaps presents recommendations prioritised needs.

Soils: A Contemporary Perspective
Soils are viewed in the context of ecosystem services, soil processes and properties, and key attributes and constraints. The framework used is based on the premise that the natural capital of soils that underlies ecosystem services is primarily determined by three core soil properties: texture, mineralogy, and soil organic matter. Up-todate descriptions and geographical distribution of soil or...
متن کاملOn preconditioning strategies for geotechnics
Iterative solvers are of increasing interest in geomechanics with the move towards 3D finite element modelling. Potentially, these methods can lead to reduced computational complexity as, unlike direct methods, they do not require the full system matrix to be assembled. In general, however, iterative solvers have not been widely adopted in geomechanics due to problems with convergence. This pap...
متن کاملGeneral report TC202: transport geotechnics
Today's needs of urban transportation including roads, railways, airports and harbours demand significant resources for infrastructure development in view of rapid and efficient public and commercial (freight) services. In most cases, authorities have had difficulties in meeting these service demands due to the rapidly growing public, industrial, mining and agricultural sectors in many parts of...
متن کاملAn Exposome Perspective on Environmental Enteric Dysfunction
BACKGROUND Environmental exposures to chemicals have been shown to influence gastrointestinal function, yet little is known regarding whether chemical mixtures may be involved in the development of a subclinical enteric dysfunction found in infants and children born into poor hygiene and sanitation. Advances in gastrointestinal and immunotoxicology fields merit inclusion in complex discussions ...
متن کاملApplication of Digital Photogrammetry in Geotechnics
Acquiring geometric data, such as coordinates, displacements or deformations, has always been a way to verify mathematical modelling in civil engineering. The introduction of finite elements methods further reinforced this trend. This paper reports on two applications of photogrammetry to soil and rock mechanics in order to provide an accurate and dense description of the deformation fields of ...
